Student Planting flowers with help from teacher

"One of the most delightful things about a garden is the anticipation it provides." - W.E. Johns

Holyoke Life Skills students planted flowers they grew from seeds by the front entrance of the High School. This was part of program put on by the Sedgwick County Extension Office with matching funds from the Heginbotham Trust to give students with disabilities the opportunities to work with plants.

The primary purpose of the program is to provide a hands-on learning experience for the students as they grow and then care for the plants.

The last day of February, Lidna Langelo came to the school to help the students plant their first seeds. They planted zinnias, marigolds, and verbena. Special thanks to Shauna Strecker and her students who shared space in the green house with this program. (Strecker's students will be selling their plants this Saturday starting at 10am.)

The flowers were transplanted on May 9th, just in time for graduation, with the help of Cindy Lock. The students enjoyed planting and growing them and wish that the community will enjoy the flowers during the summer.

Thank you to Langelo, Lock, Strecker and the Life Skills staff for their support of these students and giving them the opportunities to thrive.  Thank you to Nancy Miles for providing the pictures.
